I feel like the author is trying to say to her readers is that, even though America has so many different types of people from different backgrounds and up brings, that we still unity when something tragic happens. She also talks about, that during school or when you are outside plating as a little child, that we seem to avoid people that don't look like we do. In New York especially, there is a place called China town, Italian street, then not to mention all the little burrows that they live in. You're going to have a place where all the blacks live and where all the Irish people live, and the Spanish and so forth, but at the end of the day we are all American. The author also says that you see Arabs driving Jewish people around and Jewish people driving Arabs around, but back in there home countries, they hate each other and cant stand one another, but at the end of the day when the twin towers fell, the Arab and Jewish person probably helped each other during hard times.
I really like this short story a lot because I'm from New York and i know that at nights you don't go down certain streets and you don't talk to certain people, and where i lived was where mostly Spanish people lived so i was never worried about anything, but i think it was always amazing to know that we still to this day have places where every race lives in its own burrow. But that is how America works at times, but then at the end of the day we come together to support our nation.
I agree with your comment I live in Miami and during the night there is certain areas in Miami were your do not drive threw. The same happen in San Juan Puerto Rico were I used to live. Yet during we still help each other in difficult times.
ReplyDeleteEveryone streotypes, its first nature. A person walks into the room and you automatically think you know everything about he/she either by the way they dress and present themselves or by there skin color. I know im guilty of doing this and ive been proven wrong about that person many times. I think this is what the author was trying to point out briefly in this articles and i agree with you full fledge on how our nation is one of a kind in the way it comes together after tragedy strikes. Im proud to be an American citizen!
ReplyDeleteYou make a good point and I couldn't agree with you more! I think it is amazing how much our country comes together in time of tragedy. I think of 9/11 and how close we all felt to one another because of such a sad event that we all had in common. 9/11 was horrible, but our country did unify because of it. And now the same is happening with Haiti. It is cool to see how fast our country works to get help to those in need!
